EHMCC Statement on Ganesh Chaturthi 2017

Created: Tuesday, 08 August 2017

To whom it may concern:

It has come to the attention of the Trustees of the Edinburgh Hindu Mandir that  rumors are being spread in the community that the Edinburgh Hindu Mandir has not approved the Marathi Mitra Mandal request to hold Ganesh Chaturthi 2017 at the Mandir.

  • Contrarily to the unfounded rumor-mongering, the Management Committee had done everything in its power (for several months) to persuade the Marathi Mitra Mandal to hold the Ganesh Chaturthi at the Mandir (to an extend that the Mandir was willing to write-off any deficit up to £500).
  • From the very start of the negotiations, one or two committee members of the MMM-E (who were preparing to hold Ganesh Chaturthi away from Mandir from the very beginning) had been misleading the Trustees of the Mandir. Their entire Ganesh Chaturthi program including the hire of the Portobello Venue was set at lest four months ago, while there were ongoing negotiations with the EHMCC.
  • One of the statements published by the one or two members of the MMME is “had extensive discussions with mandir committee over last 3 months so as to convince them to hold the SGF together as last years model but the discussion did not yield any positive outcome”. Facts are that the Trustees of the Edinburgh Hindu Mandir had offered to hold the Ganesh Chaturthi festival at the Mandir over the one and a half day (Friday and Saturday) according to the traditions, and the MMM-E was free to hold their cultural event on Sunday at the Portobello Town Hall, which was rejected.
  • “along with the support of other community organisations in and around Edinburgh are going to celebrate SGF over 3 days.” These other community organisations that the MMM-E is talking about were duped in thinking that the Trustees of the Edinburgh Hindu Mandir had turned the MMM-E away from holding the SGF at the Mandir)
  • During the last years Ganesh Chaturthi festival, the MMM-E fell short of funds and the Trustees of the Mandir approve to contributed financially up-to the tune of £250.

The facts are, this year the Trustees of the EHMCC had offered;

  1. to waive any rentals
  2. unlimited use of the Mandir facilities
  3. unlimited use of disposables (cups, spoons, plates etc...)
  4. provide Liability insurance (savings of at lest £150)
  5. any surplus raised during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival to be set aside for MMM-E to be spent as they wish for any such religious/cultural festivals
  6. in case of loss, the Mandir will write off up to £500
  7. allowed to MMME to hold their cultural event on Sunday (27th August)

  • The Trustees of the Edinburgh Hindu Mandir feel that if anyone who is donating towards the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, they expect the funds to be utilized for the running of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival and any such religious/cultural festivals and not to raise funds towards other unrelated events.
  • In all honestly, the Trustees of the EHMCC did not at any point convey to the MMM-E that they could not be a part of the Ganesh Chaturthi festive, in fact the Trustees of the EHMCC wrote to the MMM-E on the 14/07/2017 but inviting them with open arms to celebrate the Ganesh Chaturthi festive at the Mandir but unfortunately, they did not have a decency to respond to the EHMCC request.
  • It was through the third party, the Trustees of the EHMCC came to know of their decision to hold the “SGF event” away from the Mandir.

Due to differences in opinions, one or two committee members of the MMM-E are determined to hold the Ganesh Chaturthi away from the Mandir and are now spreading slanderous rumors that the Trustees of the Mandir have rejected their offer, are now holding Ganesh Chaturthi festive within half a mile away from the Mandir. Edinburgh Mandir is a Sanatan Mandir and caters for all Hindus faiths and such derogatory comments are slanderous and untrue. The Management Committee requests that people should refrain from making such comments.

Many thanks

The Management Committee
